My Wife's 5 favorite Reads of Last Year: Inspiration from a Book Lover

by Nathan Smith

There's no denying it: my wife reads far more than I do. While I usually stick to self-help books that fuel personal and professional growth, she dives headfirst into a wide range of genres, finding stories and insights that inspire, entertain, and even challenge her perspective. So, when it came time to write about books, who better to turn to than my own in-house literary expert?

To tie this love for reading back to our local community, I want to shine a spotlight on one of Kernersville's gems: Byrdhouse Books. This cozy bookstore is more than just a place to shop; it's a haven for book lovers and a vital part of our town's charm. If you're looking for your next great read, it's the perfect place to start.

Now, let's get to the main event: my wife's top five favorite books from last year. Here's what she loved and why each book left a lasting impression on her:

1. The Light in Hidden Places, by Sharon Cameron

My wife's review: Based on a true story, The Light in Hidden Places gives us a rare insight from a non-Jewish perspective: Imagine being a 16 year old Polish girl working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, just to keep yourself, your younger sister, and 13 jews (whom you are hiding in your attic) fed and alive, all while Nazi nurses and soldiers occupy your spare bedroom!I could not even begin to fathom the strength and courage it took for Stefania to carry all that responsibility at such a young age. This book pulled me in immediately-I couldn't put it down!

2. Reminders of Him, by Colleen Hoover

My wife's review: This book will forever live rent-free in my mind and heart! Mistakes were made that have cost Kenna everything, including a relationship with her young daughter. As she tries to rebuild relationships with those in her daughter's life and works hard to make amends, my heart, as a mother, breaks for Kenna over and over. I can't even begin to imagine living with the grief and regret that she does, especially without full access to my own child, who is within fingertips' reach. This book definitely pulls at the heartstrings.

3. It Ends With Us, by Colleen Hoover

My wife's review: Ignore the movie, ignore the controversy surrounding the movie, JUST READ THE BOOK! It Ends with Us is a powerful and emotional story that stays with you long after you finish it. Lily's journey, from love to hearbreak, is heartbreaking yet empowering. The bond between Lily and Atlas adds so much depth to the story, reminding us of the importance of true love and self-respect. It's a raw and honest look at tough choices, and the importance of self-worth. This book is a must read, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a story that's both moving and thought-provoking.

4. Denton Little's Deathdate, by Lance Rubin

My wife's review: Want a fun, intriguing, and quirky read that's different from everything you've read? Then this is the book for you! Can you imagine knowing the day you die from the moment you're born, and there's nothing you can do to stop it? Imagine attending your own funeral and then just sitting in your house, waiting for it to happen! This book had me on the edge of my seat and laughing at the same time! Denton Little's Deathdate is a unique and thought-provoking story that blends humor with deeper reflections on life, death, and fate. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a fresh, unforgettable read.

5. The Silent Patient, by Alex Michaelides

My wife's review: Slow-moving but a page-turner! I devoured this book! The Silent Patient keeps you hooked from start to finish, with every twist and revelation pulling you deeper into the mystery. The characters are compelling, and the suspense is perfectly built. I couldn't put it down, and once I reached the end, I was left speechless. A must-read for anyone who loves psychological thrillers!

Honorable Mention: Witches of Welkin is a warm and cozy witch story that's also about a beautiful celebration of girl power, friendship, and the magic of female solidarity. I loved C.R. Pigg's take on quirky witches struggling to fit in, how they work to grow their powers with their own spell book and acquire their own familiars. The bond between Sybil and Ophelia is sweet and heartfelt as they learn, grow, and work together to save Welkin. Will there be a sequel? I'm hoping so because I can't wait to see where this magical journey goes next!
